The 3-card answer band
Most procurement decisions on Real User Monitoring fall into three clear bands by traffic volume. The card most users want is the middle one, 100K to 1M sessions per month, where the cheapest published per-session rate (Sentry at $0.50/1K) and the most expensive (Datadog at $4.50/1K) produce a 9x spread on the same workload. The lowest band, under 100K sessions per month, is dominated by free tiers from Cloudflare, Sentry, Fullstory, and Raygun. The highest band, above 1M sessions per month, is where vendors stop publishing prices and switch to enterprise quote-only pricing. The matrix below lists each tier with its actual price.
Cloudflare Web Analytics (free, no cap), Sentry (5K errors + 50 replays), Fullstory (30K sessions), Raygun (5K sessions trial).
Sentry $0.50/1K, Dynatrace $2.25/1K, AWS CloudWatch RUM $1/1K, Datadog $4.50/1K. Pick by the model that matches your traffic shape.
Datadog, Dynatrace and Sentry still publish per-session rates at scale, but most enterprise procurements end up at Catchpoint, Akamai mPulse, Splunk RUM or Fullstory, all quote-only.

What Real User Monitoring measures
RUM is a category of frontend observability tool that runs a small JavaScript snippet in the visitor's browser. The snippet captures three buckets of telemetry: timing data (page load, Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, time-to-first-byte), error data (uncaught exceptions, network failures, console errors), and session data (clicks, scrolls, page-to-page navigation, and in many tools a full visual replay of the session). All of this is sent to the vendor's collection endpoint, processed, and surfaced as dashboards, alerts, and replay players.
RUM differs from synthetic monitoring (which runs scripted browser sessions on a schedule from controlled locations) by capturing only real user behaviour. It differs from Application Performance Monitoring (APM) by sitting in the browser, not the backend application server. It differs from log analytics by being event-driven rather than line-by-line. And it differs from session replay-only tools (Hotjar, FullStory's legacy product) by including performance metrics alongside the replay.
The pricing model that dominates RUM is per-session or per-pageview, because the vendor's cost scales with the volume of beacons received from end-user browsers. Vendors that ingest into a broader observability platform (New Relic, Elastic, Grafana Cloud) charge per-GB of data ingested across all telemetry. Vendors that bundle RUM into a wider enterprise observability suite (Splunk, Cisco AppDynamics, Akamai mPulse) tend toward quote-only enterprise pricing.
Why per-session prices vary 9x
On the same workload, say, 1 million sessions per month with 10% session replay coverage and 30-day retention, Sentry quotes about $500/month while Datadog quotes about $4,500/month. That 9x spread is real, and it has four drivers.
- Bundled vs add-on session replay. Datadog and AWS CloudWatch RUM bundle session replay into the per-session price. Dynatrace and Sentry charge for replay separately. LogRocket treats replay as the entire product. The bundled vendors look more expensive at a glance but charge once for both products.
- Retention. 30 days is the default. 90 days adds 20-30% to most vendors' bills. 13 months (Fullstory, some enterprise tiers) adds 50% or more. Sampling matters too, many enterprise RUM contracts default to 10% sampling and surcharge for 100% capture.
- Pricing-model collision. A vendor charging $0.40/GB of data ingest (New Relic) will look cheap for low-volume RUM but expensive once it bundles APM, logs, and infrastructure into the same ingest meter. A vendor charging per-session (Datadog, Dynatrace) is predictable on a single product line but doesn't scale discount across the wider stack.
- Annual commit discount. Most vendors offer 15-25% off annual prepayment. SpeedCurve publishes 20%, Sentry 17%, LogRocket 17%. Datadog discounts annual commit but doesn't publish the percentage. Quote-only vendors negotiate annual discount as part of the contract.
The five vendors that won't quote a price
Akamai mPulse, Splunk RUM (within Splunk Observability Cloud), Pingdom RUM, Fullstory's paid tiers, and Catchpoint's enterprise tier all require a sales call to learn the price. We don't fabricate numbers for them. We list them in the matrix above with a Quote Only badge and link to their contact pages. See the quote-only vendors deep-dive for the operational consequences of vendor opacity, chiefly, that you cannot run a procurement against them in less than 4-6 weeks, and you cannot benchmark them against published rates without first signing an NDA.
